Melanie Sears has been a student of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) for more than thirty years. She has written three books about the subject. Humanizing Health Care was written while Melanie worked in an inpatient psychiatric unit as an RN. She noticed that the policies and practices in the psychiatric unit were not congruent with her internal values, so she wrote the book comparing and contrasting what was going on.
Humanizing Health Care was followed by a workbook, Choose Your Words. Two versions of this book exist, one geared toward professionals who work in health care and the other one geared to caregivers and family members caring for someone with a psychiatric disorder. Humanizing Health Care is translated into German, Korean and Japanese.
Melanie has given workshops in NVC worldwide. She also works with couples and individuals as a coach and empath. She retired from the nursing profession in 2016 and lives in a 55+ community in Laguna Woods, CA.
